The 8th Pay Commission is expected to bring significant changes to the pension structure for central government pensioners in India. While official details are yet to be announced, here’s what is anticipated based on previous pay commission trends:

Expected Changes for Pensioners:

  1. Minimum Pension Increase:
    • Currently, the minimum pension under the 7th Pay Commission is ₹9,000 per month.
    • Under the 8th Pay Commission, it is expected to increase to around ₹18,000 – ₹20,000 per month.
  2. Fitment Factor:
    • The fitment factor is likely to be around 2.5 to 2.8, meaning pensioners could see a 2.5x to 2.8x increase in their current basic pension.
    • Example calculation: ₹10,000 × 2.6 = ₹26,000 (approximate revised pension).
  3. Dearness Relief (DR):
    • Pensioners will continue to receive Dearness Relief, which is revised twice a year based on inflation trends.
    • The expected DR rate could reach 50%-60% by 2026, leading to further increases in pension amounts.
  4. Family Pension:
    • Family pensions, currently at 30% of the last drawn basic pay, might see an increase in line with salary hikes.
    • Revised minimum family pension is expected to be in the range of ₹15,000 – ₹18,000.
  5. Gratuity and Commutation:
    • With the expected increase in basic pay, the gratuity ceiling might rise from ₹20 lakh to ₹30 lakh.
    • Pension commutation values may also increase, benefiting retiring employees.
  6. Health Benefits:
    • Pensioners may see improved medical coverage through schemes like CGHS (Central Government Health Scheme), with possible enhancements in coverage and reimbursement limits.

Projected Pension Calculation Example:

If a retiree currently receives ₹20,000 as basic pension under the 7th Pay Commission, applying an estimated fitment factor of 2.6:

  • New Pension: ₹20,000 × 2.6 = ₹52,000 (approx.)
  • Adding Dearness Relief (50% estimated): ₹52,000 + ₹26,000 = ₹78,000 total pension.
